The case for calmer analytics
A full dashboard feels like progress. Usually it's just noise in a nicer layout.
I know, because I used to build them. I optimized for density: as many charts, numbers, and tiles on one screen as I could fit. It felt thorough. It felt like doing the job well.
It wasn't. A wall of numbers is not clarity, it's visual fatigue. You can't spot a pattern across forty tiles, and you certainly can't decide anything from them. You scan, you feel vaguely behind, and you refresh again later just to be sure.
That refreshing isn't an accident. There's a book about it, "Hooked" by Nir Eyal, basically a manual for building products people can't put down. The engine is the variable reward: a number that might have changed since you last looked. Slot machines run on it. So do most dashboards, whether they meant to or not. I have a name for what it leaves behind. Dashboard dread: the quiet hum that you're probably missing something.
The obvious fix is to show less. But hide too much and you trade one problem for another, because we're all a little lazy. If a report isn't already in front of you, you won't go build it, and you'll overlook the thing that mattered. A blank, minimal tool is just a different way to miss things.
So the answer isn't more, and it isn't less. It's filtered.

Here's the line we hold ourselves to: open it once a week, read one paragraph, know whether things are fine. If you feel the pull to refresh ten times a day, we built another slot machine and we failed.
